The relevant lingo of left-handed scripts redesign

As I started to write and talk more on Clockwise Loops project, I found awkwardness in the choice of words to refer to pieces and concepts related to the work. It's not my background, not my mother language and I haven't yet spent enough time on the topic. LLM-assisted research allowed me to grasp on the relevant concepts and ideas quickly but without spending enough time to soak in the lingo accurately, I won't be able to communicate well on what I'm doing and what I've discovered.

Referring to those who wield a left hand

I like the word lefty but nowadays it could be political. I posted a quick text-only story on my ig crowd-sourcing for opinions from lefty friends and some concerned friends reached out for clarification. I learned to provide enough context whenever I use the word. Left-handed is clear to use but feel too formal and long. Left-hander is colorful and useful to rotate.

(Hand)writing

Similar to lefty, I can say 'writing' to clearly refer to handwriting when enough context was given and save a syllable

What is this that I'm doing?

What I'm rethinking is about both alphabet shapes and ways of writing them. I didn't the know enough of useful terms to describe this without being wordy, vague, overclaiming, or unrelatable. Now, I settled these as my favorite terms.

  • Letterforms are the shapes. Bowl, stem, terminal and many more are their components
  • Ductus is the motions behind forming those letterforms including the strokes order and their directions
  • Penmanship is the topic. It is the craft of usability for narrowly targeted writers, unlike Calligraphy where the focus is on aesthetical mastery. I like to think that Clockwise Loops project is a parkour as opposed to free-running
  • (Penman) script is a named style of handwriting (ie letterforms + ductus), exactly the kind of output I'm producing.
Thanks for reading. Have a yummy dream tonight.
